Great Lakes Peace Cup Tournament Nominated for Sport Event of the Year

AFTCS/TDRP's pilot project, the Great Lakes Peace Cup Tournament, has been selected as one of the three nominees for the Sport Event of the Year Award rewarded by L'Organisation pour la Paix par le Sport (Peace and Sport) to initiatives and people who have outstandingly contributed to peace and social stability through sport.

The winner will be announced in the Peace and Sport Awards Ceremony on 7 November 2013 in Monaco under the High Patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II. AFTCS/TDRP representative will attend the ceremony in Monaco.

Aiming at promoting reconciliation in conflict-affected countries and building confidence of former combatants through the unifying power of sport, the Tournament was held through the spring and summer of 2012 in Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda.

The Great Lakes Peace Cup demonstrated that the stigma of having taken part in combat could be worn away by humanizing former combatants and their host communities through collective social action. This in turn could begin to repair the social fabric torn apart by years of violent conflict. The tournament also proved that football is not just a game, but also a readily available tool to combat discrimination and create an environment where everyone feels equal.

A documentary, Scoring for Peace, was also produced to depict the players' stories on their quest to win the Tournament.
